I have been working on this tack trunk on and off for over a year, but it’s finally finished and delivered to my daughter who has been patiently awaiting it’s arrival!
I used a red oak stain for the outside of the trunk, but kept the inside of the trunk stained a lighter color so that it would be easier to view the contents in low light levels. I also added multiple coats of a spar urethane as a top coat for protection from the elements.
It has been a long time coming but the end results are worth it. If you are interested in building your own trunk using this design I have plans available for download directly from the website. Visit the Downloadable Woodworking Plans page.
If you interested in seeing more photos of the finished tack trunk I’ve included a slide show below for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy, and thanks for reading.
Is there a master materials list, what sheet goods how many 1×8’s etc?
There is a list of the individual parts and their sizes and suggested material on pages 19-20 of the Tack Trunk Plans.
I don’t supply a summarized master list since there is so much variation in how each woodworker approaches a project. Some will buy larger material and rip and plane to the required dimensions, others will buy the material as stated directly from the box store. Also, based on grain pattern and the quality of the wood product you may purchase a piece of hardwood or sheet good and know that you will be not be using a certain section of it.
Two sheets of 3/4″ plywood should be sufficient for the trunk if you purchase good quality plywood that is all useable.
what are the dimensions of the tack box?
Hi Lauren. The completed trunk measures 39″ wide x 24″ deep x 30″ high without feet or casters added.
what is the approximate cost of all the materials?
It’s very hard to give you an estimate for the cost of all the materials. It would depend on the type of wood that is used, where that wood is purchased, whether it’s rough cut or already milled, the type of hardware that is added such as hinges, casters, hasps, top lifts, handles. The cost could range anywhere from $100 to $500 or more.
