Milling the Rough Cut Lumber

By |February 10th, 2008

Before I could use the walnut, I needed to pick out what I was going to be using for the project and plane that down to 3/4 and 2/4 thickness. I don’t own a thickness planer, but a friend at work (Carl) offered to help me out. I spent the afternoon today at Carl’s home workshop where he helped me tremendously getting this wood ready to use. He also showed me quite a few tips including how to use Danish oil to bring out the color and grain pattern from this walnut. Thanks Carl !

Here’s a shot of the rough cut lumber prior to heading over to Carl’s shop.

The Plan Arrives

By |February 6th, 2008

The plan for the chest arrived today (along with some Forstner drill bits and a pipe clamp). The plan was on a large sheet of paper, printed on both sides. I was expecting a little bit more … but I think there’s enough information here to get the job done.

The original plan called for using a 4×8 sheet of Mahogany plywood, and about 10 board feet of Mahogany stock. I’m going to try and not use much plywood if I can. Also, the joinery used in the plan is basically butt joints secured with glue and finishing nails … I’ll be making some changes to the plan to use some nicer joinery techniques and not have any […]

Road Trip !

By |February 3rd, 2008

Nancy and I headed up to my brother’s place in CT today to pick up some of the walnut. We had a nice visit with Andy and Penny and then headed back home to watch the Giants win the Superbowl!

Finding a place to store the walnut wasn’t easy. I had to clear an area of the workshop to make room to stack it.

DVD Player Cabinet is ready for finishing!

By |January 31st, 2008

I finished sanding the cabinet tonight and the Transtint dye stain is due to be delivered tomorrow so maybe I’ll start the finishing work on the cabinet this weekend. I added the little chat window to the home page since my daughter wanted me to add some kind of blog page so she could leave me messages. Feel free to add some comments! I’ve started another project, but it’s a surprise so I wont be posting any info on this until it’s done … sorry 🙁

DVD Player Cabinet

By |January 31st, 2008

My 27″ TV in the bedroom sits on top of a dresser and there was no room to also place a DVD player on the dresser so I decided to create a short DVD cabinet that was strong enough to support the weight of the TV and where the DVD player could be placed inside this cabinet.

I decide to build the DVD cabinet out of maple because it was available locally. I used maple plywood for the carcase and top and maple stock for the trim. The top is just a 12″x22″ piece of plywood with maple edging that I ripped and mitered from a 1″ x 4″ maple board.

I did not want to use any fasteners to attach […]
